Korea’s top high-tech home goods manufacturers, LG and Samsung, are apparently aligned on the role of AI in appliances, based on their new product introductions at this month’s annual CES trade event in Las Vegas.
Topping Samsung’s dance card was a new line of advanced refrigerators featuring AI hybrid cooling technology, which combines a highly efficient compressor with a Peltier module —a semiconductor device that achieves cooling by harnessing the temperature change arising from the flow of electric current.
Samsung said the Peltier module enables the refrigerator to function like a hybrid car, using two power sources together only when needed to efficiently cool the inside of the fridge, as determined by an AI algorithm. Beyond its super-high efficiency, the technology’s precise temperature control also keeps food fresher and longer, the company added.

Meanwhile, LG used the annual tech forum to debut its second-generation LG Signature series, which builds on the luxury line’s minimalist aesthetic and premium performance with AI-driven features and intuitive functionality. The new collection includes a French door refrigerator with T-OLED door panel; Smart InstaView over-the-range microwave and slide-in double oven induction range; a dishwasher; and an all-in-one washer/dryer and laundry pair.
AI, which LG has relabeled “Affectionate Intelligence,” comes into play throughout the Signature series, including the washers’ AI Direct Drive (AI DD) 2.0 feature for precise fabric care. “Through the flawless fusion of state-of-the-art smart home, AI and connectivity technologies, we will continue to provide transformative customer experiences that go beyond expectations,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of the LG Home Appliance Solution Company.
