Ziwi mattresses improve upon Purple’s design, says the inventor of both.
Inventor says Ziwi mattresses improve upon the original

There’s a new player in the mattress category, devised by a trio of veterans of Purple mattress.
The new brand, Ziwi, offers a new pressure-isolating system that solves what Purple inventor Tony Pearce saw as a flaw in the original grid design of Purple.
“I am forever proud of the grid technology my brother and I created and the incredible improvements it has made for millions of people,” Pearce said. “It remains one my proudest achievements. No technology has been able to isolate pressure points from support areas of the body and provide targeted softness and firmness the way the grid did. However, I have long felt there was a way to deliver this important comfort without the unusual feel and instability of the grid.”

Pearce founded Ziwi along with co-founders Dan Hill and Joe Nilson.
The new technology, called Ziwi ZiPP, draws alternating channels of support upward and closer to the surface, the company said. It’s designed to redistribute weight across the support material, which flexes laterally under pressure points to achieve equilibrium. The design also enables heat-releasing airways to open instead of compress. An actively heat-neutral mattress puts the customer in complete control of their sleep temperature.
Five More Planned
Ziwi launches with a single bed model featuring Ziwi ZiPP technology but will quickly release five additional models.
“Ziwi ZiPP technology is revolutionary but as with any solution in sleep, one bed does not fit all,” Nilson said. “Our extended models tailor the ZiPP experience to specific preferences and sleep needs and will range from $1,399 to $3,999.”
Co-founder Hill said Ziwi is an extension of the innovation demonstrated by Purple.
“In our previous venture we shook up the industry with a new technology but also ignited excitement in the consumer to learn about and act on sleep — shopping online or in-person,” he said. “We’re excited to do that again with Ziwi.”
Utah-based Purple was founded in 2015 by brothers Tony and Terry Pearce as a wheelchair cushioning company and today is sold direct online and in more than 3,000 retail outlets, including 60 Purple stores. The brothers retired from the company’s board in 2020.
