AVB Scholarship winner Katie Watson was inspired to help others

A highlight of the recent 2024 AVB Summit was the announcement of this year’s AVB BrandSource Scholarship Award winners.

As part of a longstanding effort to support higher education, the group bestows $20,000 in academic achievement awards annually. Among this year’s four winners was Kathryn Watson, whose dad, member Jeff Watson, is the owner of Watson Furniture Flooring Appliances (WFC) in Chesnee, S.C.

Watson will be graduating from Chesnee High School in June and plans on attending Spartanburg Community College in the fall where she will major nursing. She already has several college credits and will have a year’s worth of courses under her belt by the time she graduates high school next month. After earning her associate degree in 2026, Katie hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree and then a doctorate, with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.

Triumph Over Tragedy

Watson was inspired to enter nursing after she lost her boyfriend Toby in a car accident several years ago. “I watched as the nurses cared not just him, but also his friends and family during such an extremely difficult time,” she said. “I was living through this traumatic event when I realized that my calling would be to administer to the needs of others inside the walls of a hospital. I have always been passionate about caring for others, and channeling that passion into a career is making that dream come true.”

When not in class, Watson enjoys playing pickleball with her family and “hanging out” with friends. She also began competitive cheerleading at 10 and helped her team win a state championship in 2019. A multi-sport athlete, she has played softball since middle school, is on her high school’s varsity team and a summer traveling team, and is also an avid basketball player.

“I love basketball,” she said. “I began playing my sophomore year in high school thanks to the influence of my grandfather, Arthur Lynn, who many of you know. He encouraged me to play and I immediately fell in love with it! I am so excited and eager for this journey. I want to thank AVB for being a part of it!”

Fellow Scholars

Joining Watson as 2024 AVB BrandSource Scholarship recipients are Serenity Guerrero of Christie’s Appliance & Mattress Company and ProSource’s Isabel Janka, whose dad Bill owns Mission Audio Video. A profile of the fourth winner, Colin Burzycki, whose mom owns NEAG member Keith’s Appliances, will follow.

The goal of the AVB BrandSource scholarships is to provide financial assistance to the children of BrandSource members, AVB affiliates and their staff to help offset higher education expenses. Four winners are chosen annually from dozens of submissions, with each receiving $5,000 toward enrollment the following fall. Eligibility now extends beyond those attending four-year colleges to include students enrolled in tech and trade school programs.
