Construction could begin in August

Sub-Zero Group is reportedly scheduled to begin construction next month on a 400,000-square-foot light manufacturing plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
According to a report in Area Development, the maker of ultra-premium Wolf and Sub-Zero brand kitchen appliances and Cove dishwashers expects to employ 192 workers at the $140.6 million facility, which is scheduled to open in September 2025.
The estimated August start date was reported by Construction Journal. Queries to Sub-Zero were not returned at press time.
At a public hearing last year, Scott Wareing, Sub-Zero’s senior vice president of operations and product, said, “We have reached the point that our three main sites are burgeoning and full, so we are seeking a new location to add to our footprint for the next leg of our journey. It’s just a phenomenal fit.”
Ron Corbett, vice president of economic development for the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, told the Corridor Business Journal that factors favoring his city included its strong manufacturing base, the ancillary support of well-trained operations workers, and the vocational and technical education programs offered through Kirkwood Community College.
Proximity to Sub-Zero’s headquarters in Madison, Wis., was “another check mark in our favor,” he told the Journal.
Other incentives included a $1.1 million forgivable loan awarded by the Iowa Economic Development Authority, about $2.6 million in state tax credits and a 20-year, 75-percent tax exemption from Cedar Rapids valued at about $30.7 million, the Des Moines Register reported.
Sub-Zero also operates manufacturing facilities in Madison, Fitchburg, Wis., and Goodyear, Ariz.
