Whirlpool Adds Air Fry Feature, Remotely

OTA update brings new cooking cycles to customers’ kitchens

Thanks to smart home technology, we’re getting very close to a click-your-heels-and-make-it-happen kinda world.

And while Whirlpool can’t send Dorothy back to Kansas just yet, it can, and has, enhanced previously purchased smart ranges and wall ovens remotely with a new air fry mode.

An over-the-air (OTA) update issued this month by the manufacturer leverages the onboard convection capabilities of 10 select smart models to add air fry cooking cycles plus connectivity for the company’s Yummly Smart Thermometer.

“Whirlpool brand is committed to creating new solutions that help customers manage evolving needs and preferences,” noted Katie Sadler, kitchen brand manager, Whirlpool. The WiFi updates, she said, prove that “our appliances, just like our consumers, get smarter over time. With these upgrades, we hope to provide families with even more ways to provide care for one another.”

The air fry upgrade is instant, Sadler added, and the vendor plans to offer a separate air fry basket at Whirlpool.com early this year.

The update will also allow the company’s smart, totally wireless, leave-in meat thermometer to sync with Whirlpool smart ovens and ranges, enabling Yummly app users to track the cooking progress of beef, fish and poultry.
