In this era of safe social distancing, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends we all stand six feet apart and avoid direct contact. But how does that work in a retail environment?
Todd Hall, president of Duerden’s Appliance & Mattress in Bountiful, Utah, has come up with a simple but graphic guideline to ensure the safety of his sales staff and customers: Six-foot sections of blue masking tape applied to the floors of his showroom aisles.
“We’ve been humbled by our inability to judge distance,” Hall told YSN in an email. “So we put some tape on the floor, just to show customers that we care and to give our team members a reference.”
Based on Duerden’s newfound experience, the BrandSource dealer can now determine a safe distance in appliance terms. According to Hall, six feet translates into:
- Two full-sized refrigerators
- One-and-a-half pro ranges
- Nearly three consumer ranges
- Nearly three washers or dryers
- Three dishwashers
- One queen mattress
However, when it comes to deliveries, installation and service, social distancing is more difficult to maintain within customers’ kitchens. “They really need to be one room away,” Hall reminds.
