One day every year, Roby’s Furniture & Appliance in Oregon closes all six of its stores and everyone on each team goes out into their community to do something to help others.

“This year we did many projects; some for an assisted living facility, a child abuse intervention center and a makeover on a teacher’s lounge at a local elementary school,”  said  Tracy Anderton, executive administrator at Roby’s  “We clean, paint, build, donate much-needed furniture and appliances – whatever we can do to help. This quote by Ronald Reagan is what inspires us: ‘We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone’ …because it’s easy to become overwhelmed with all the need in the world.”

Tillamook Team worked at an assisted living facility. The main project was to gut the employee break room. The facility had used it for a storage area for years and the employees didn’t have a place to go. The team painted the walls and lockers, scrubbed the floor, repaired cabinetry, unloaded the room of miscellaneous equipment and relocated it within the building. Roby’s provided a table, chairs, refrigerator, microwave, bright rug and wall mirror.

The outdoor courtyard was cleaned up – raked and weeded – along with building six brand new planter boxes so that residents can enjoy gardening in the spring and summer months at waist level.

Tillamook Team also built new shelves in the laundry room, and completely gutted and reorganized another storage room and also built additional shelving in there.

“Probably the most fun part of the day was having lunch with all of the residents,” Kyle Langeliers of Roby’s said. “They were so happy to have new faces to visit with; many of us sat with folks who don’t even have family in Oregon. The residents and staff were so grateful to us. We’ve received multiple thank you notes and even a big batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies this week from them!”

Roby’s Astoria Team helped a local elementary school.  Some of the students from the school even helped out because the principal found it a good idea to help  as a way to also give back to their school community as well.

The Newport Team worked with a local homeless shelter and finished out a laundry room. They hung sheet rock and taped it. They installed two laundry pairs with the help of local electrician, plumber and HVAC. They also built some shelves for storage of clothes, laundry soap, and other supplies.
